Centenary Celebrations

August 2019 marked the centenary of Captain Harry Butler’s historic mail flight over Gulf St Vincent. A host of celebrations were held in Minlaton in recognition of this significant event.

Saturday 3rd August saw the unveiling of an interpretive sign at Captain Butler’s crash site followed by a historic walk around Minlaton. On Saturday evening, a celebration was held at the town hall. Over three hundred people attended, including many distinguished guests.

On Sunday 4th August, Minlaton aerodrome was packed with thousands of visitors. They day included acrobatic displays, helicopter and bi plane joy flights, model planes, a vintage car procession and even chainsaw carving of a model of Captain Butler.

Thank you to the community who organised all these events, and all those who took part and attended the celebrations. I was honoured to be welcomed by this magnificent community and thrilled to meet many descendants of Captain Butler and those who had known him.
